About this role
As the VTS Supervisor you will report to the Port Operation Manager on a daily basis. You’re responsible for the safe and efficient movement of vessels in and out of the Marine Offloading Facility and LNG Terminal on a 24-hour basis.
In this role you’ll be mentoring and supervising the VTS operators. Your due diligence will go far in ensuring that agreed standard operating procedures (SOP) and protocols are followed. You are responsible for safe and efficient management of the Vessel traffic in the Afungi Bay.
Your duties will fall into these broad categories:
Supervising is a key part of your job and title. You will oversee VTS Operators, VTS services, and port communication. You’ll be supervising any communication with vessels arriving and departing from port. Your role is vital in ensuring that all port traffic is complaint with relevant laws and regulations. Your efforts will make certain that services execute smoothly and efficiently.
Monitoring and Maintaining
You will monitor all port traffic port, noting all approaches, departures, or radar changes. Environmental information supporting the safe traffic flow within the port is vital. You logging skills will be utilized quite frequently with this position. You will be maintaining a daily log of all communication of vessels arriving, departing or moving within the Port. This will include a report of all incidents and accidents. All logs will happen in the Port Management Information System database. The database must include arrivals, departures and moves to facilitate voyage planning and forecasting.
You’ll be communicating information to agents, terminal operators and other stakeholders. You’ll ensure appropriate services are available for vessels during their arrival, departure or movement within Port.
As a supervisor, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is mentoring. This is your chance to shape the next cycle of employees within the field. You will develop the VTS Operator training plans and procedures (both on –site and at vendor location.) At the vendor location, you’ll be providing guidance and oversight during international IALA VTS training. Some of the training that you must include will be OJD and OJT training. This is your golden opportunity to make sure that the operators learn the right procedures from the start.
Emergencies can happen on any job. Your role in an emergency is initiating procedures and liaison with emergency crew and stakeholder in line with the Port Emergency Response Plan. To prepare for the worst you will be assisting with all emergency drills, including oil spill response activities and emergency response exercises.
As the VTS Supervisor you are responsible for ensuring set-up, and adherence to, the requirements of the HES Management System. Specific accountabilities will be documented and summarized in the HES Policy Manual. All requirements will fall in line with Port marine operations and the HES manuals and procedures.
In regards to expectations set by the Port Operation Manager. You will attend all required safety meetings and communicate updated vessel movements with the appropriate Port and Terminal department(s).
You will be working closely with Terminal HES personnel to ensure that all training, including marine specialties are covered. You’ll be in charge of creating and teaching required Terminal HES training.
Safety is vital. Keep that phrase in mind with every task that you are handling and you will see great results. One of your goals is to provide a safe environment within the Port at all times. Providing VHF broadcasts containing relevant navigational and weather information is one part of a safe port. Complying with a duty of care will go a long way in enduring that safety practices are followed at all times.
