Process Safety Engineer

We are hiring a Process safety Engineer Engineer for our client, a large pharmaceutical company. This is a 5-month contract position. This individual will support the Site’s HSE program in applying HSE by design principles, act as project HSE lead and enforce HSE project requirements to identify and mitigate HSE related risks at relevant phases of projects. They will also work in partnership with engineering groups while enforcing HSE principles.

About this role

Responsibilities

  • Drive HSE by design for B100 – Design the building so that it is operational, safe, and sustainable;
  • Actively participates in design to ensure HSE risks are identified and mitigated in engineering design phases of the project;
  • Ensure regulatory requirements (eg. Occupational Health & Safety Act, Industrial Regulations, Canadian Biosafety Standards, etc.) for the design and execution are met;
  • Ensure design conforms to corporate HSE standards and guides as well as local site policies and
  • procedures;
  • Apply site’s HSE Project Requirements gate review process;
  • Coordinate and/or participate appropriate assessments as required and driving corrective actions with those responsible. Examples include:

    Process safety reviews (HazOp Studies);

    ATEX assessments / fire & explosion risk assessments;

    Ergonomic assessments;

    Biosafety assessments;

    Industrial hygiene and chemical handling assessments; and Pre-start HSE reviews.

  • Assist design team in applying safe and sustainable HSE solutions for identified risks;
  • Utilizes HSE team subject matter experts for basis of design relating to biosafety, environment, safety and hygiene;
  • Applies green building design principals. Ensures new design is compliant with regulatory and corporate Environmental requirements with a specific focus on air, noise, wastewater and energy;
  • Acts in a timely fashion to address and/or escalates significant high risk items that require immediate attention;
  • Regularly communicates back to the HSE team on project performance, key risks, lessons learned, wins, and other project updates.
  • Coordinate and lead process safety reviews of existing processes; includes making updates to the master reports when changes are made;
  • Provide solutions to mitigate HSE risks; and
  • Track and monitor corrective and preventive actions;
  • Work with HSE management in assigning HSE professionals to support project design and execution;
  • Enforce and track the HSE Project gate review process to with project managers and HSE contacts;
  • Deliver training as required for HSE Project Requirements;

About you

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering (Process or Chemical)
  • Minimum 5 years work related experience, knowledge of HS legislation/regulations/standards (specifically design, construction and maintenance related), engineering practices, and concepts.
  • Previous pharmaceutical manufacturing and process safety experience is preferred.
  • HazOp, risk analysis and FMEA experience;
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards and hierarchy of controls;
  • Knowledge of general safety principles;
  • Knowledge of biosafety and biocontainment principles;
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems (HVAC systems, power generation, utilities)
  • Ability to read engineering drawings;
  • Ability to work transversally across functions;
  • Ability to have bias for action;
  • Ability to make risk based decisions;
  • Ability to influence;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation);
  • Data management including spreadsheets, databases is an asset.
